How to Plan for a Planetary Crisis
Reminder: My "Ruggedize Your Life: The Basics" class is this Thursday
What's your family's climate strategy?
The planetary crisis is here, now, and much fiercer than we hoped. We’ve built a society unready for this more chaotic planet. Much of our world is now brittle, with places and systems that are wearing down fast, threatened with sudden destruction, subject to crashes in value and economic decline. (All this is made even more urgent for Americans by Donald Trump’s attack on science, climate foresight, and disaster prevention and recovery.) Increasing climate discontinuity is the context in which every major life decision you make will play out, for the rest of your life, and the lives of your kids and grandkids. We can’t depend on others to sort this all out for us.
Do you have a plan?
Could you use some help getting started?
My class, Ruggedize Your Life: The Basics walks you through the top-level concerns and strategies for finding or making a solid place to build a new life, ready for hard futures.
I’ve done five Basics classes so far, with over 400 great participants, and the response has been extraordinary.
Given how many more people have since said they’re interested, I’m offering another class, this Thursday, May 15th, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, Pacific time.
The class will be held on Zoom, with a recording sent out the week after for those who cannot attend live.
It concisely covers:
How bad might the planetary crisis get? Why is location so critical to good outcomes in the coming decades? Why have recent political events made it even more critical?
Why is making timely decisions so urgent now? What are the pressures making it harder and more expensive to prepare effectively for this crisis, as the crisis worsens?
Basic guidelines for making good long-term decisions for an uncertain future. There are no sure-fire solutions — but we can make choices that greatly improve our odds.
Every good personal climate strategy is unique. There’s no one formula for everyone: the “right” answers vary depending on a number of criteria: from how connected you are to your local community, to how much freedom your job and financial situation gives you, to how long into the future you’re planning.
The three general criteria that best measure the strengths and weaknesses of places you might move (or why you might stay put). An example of how to use these tools.
An overview of various regions’ pros and cons.
A few useful tips for pursuing personal ruggedization on a budget, and planning for a chaotic future with kids.
Brief explanations of key concepts: Discontinuity. Brittleness. Relative safety. Ruggedization. The coming climate-housing crisis.
